Asus MeMO Pad 172v Fix Charging Problems

I had a rapid drain issues and random charging notifications even no cable was connected. All the problems begin when charging tablet on laptop USB ports and mobile phone 1.0A charger and updating tablet to the latest version

First you need to download ASUS MeMO ClearData SOP utility from official ASUS support website. You need to extract downloaded ZIP card into MicroSD card and boot your tablet with this card.

Press Volume Up + Power if you stuck on Asus logo and don't see the blue menu screen. Use Volume keys to navigate and Power button to confirm clearing user data.

Also I noticed there is some problems with Google Play downloads on this tablets. Most apps just freeze on download. You can solve this by going to Settings-> Applications and clearing Download Manager, Google Play services and Google Play Store data.

Next step is fully discharge and charge the tablet using 2.0A power charger. I am using Kruger & Matz Dual USB 2.1A charger and I am having a good battery life.

I wouldn't recommend some cheap Chinese chargers from eBay,DX,FocalPrice and etc. These may not have actual 2.0A voltage and may come without any overcharging protective circuit boards. And you may set your home on fire if you leave those cheap chargers overnight.
On standby I am getting  3-5 days without charging and in normal use it's a 4-5h hours for surfing the web, checking email and playing some small 2D games and lots of 3D games tends to freeze this tablet.

How to root this tablet (ME172V) ?

Use RootGenius . Download Link2SD and get rid of Asus bloatware.

Porting Android games to Blackberry 10/Playbook

It's really not so easy to find a game engine that will work on Android and Blackberry Android virtual machine since Blackberry doesn't supports native code and GLES2.

Here is a few game engines that I tested so far:

Doesn't works because uses native code:
LibGDX
Rokon
e3roid
ZenGL a really easy Pascal game engine for Android.
Flixel-Android ... old version without libGDX libraries may work.
ORX Engine
Gideros Mobile - didn't tested yet,but saw in Blackberry forums that nobody successfully ported any game with this engine yet. And I believe it uses libGDX too.
LGame aka Loon-Simple engine.
AndEngine the latest version use GLES2. The older version may work just fine, but for now I just successfully compiled the library. The examples I downloaded uses native code. There is already few games ported to Blackberry with this library so I will investigate into it later on.

Can successfully export BAR file, but doesn't works on Blackberry 10 simulator
ANGLE and easy to use engine, compiles just fine, but can't get any graphics on screen.
LGame 0.2.8S game example seems to work and it shows about 60 FPS. You will find the older version and example on the project download page. After a while I am getting message that app is not responding and I can't shoot any bullets due huge lag.
Works really fast on Android phone.
PapayaGameSDK - didn't tested since couldn't compile any APK. It's really interesting engine with a ActionScript like programming interface.

Seems to work:

Candroid - an canvas game engine. Seems to work after removing alerts box in examples, but couldn't play a example Duck Hunt style game smoothly and after a while I got exception about not responding application. Probably it's so slow because uses software rendered instead of GPU and GLES1.
To compile the examples with Eclipse you will need  a Subversion plugin and when you select File -> Import -> Checkout from SVN as URL type a
http://candroidengine.googlecode.com/svn/
And Eclipse will automatically find a Android project.

For now I don't have any game engine for a smooth games development.

Earn some green on Android

After looking  a few ways to monetize free Android apps I randomly found a some apps to make a some cash just by installing games on your Android phone.

REQUIRES ANDROID:
2.1 and up

With this app you can earn cents for installing apps, reffering friends and and liking some Facebook pages. It offers various gift cards like Starbucks,iTunes and eBay.

Use my invite code GK1073101 to get a instant 0.25$ into your account.

REQUIRES ANDROID:
1.6 and up

This app is for gamers and you get a gold for installing apps, completing offers or buying some stuff. It takes a while to get a enough gold to redeem gifts cards and games. For gold you can get a Nintendo,XBox Live gifts cards some PC and Xbox games like Minecraft. Too bad it doesn't offer a Amazon Gift Cards.

Use my invite code 06U4IS2ZD20SCK and we both will get a 5 Gold coins bonus!

REQUIRES ANDROID:
2.0 and up

And the last app is quite the same as the first one just doesn't have a much offers. You will be earning a real cents and will be able to withdraw them into PayPal if you collect at least 5$ using it.
It offers to sign-up for offers by email, but you wouldn't get any cents for that so I always press "No Thanks!"

Other app to try is  a Free Money Factory . It requires a Android 2.3 so I wasn't able to try it on a real device. Use a my invitation code 136702 and earn extra 600 points.

And if you are an apps developer you should definitely read a this blog for monetizing your apps. You might be also interested in  a MoMinis  Studio - a free game maker for mobile games. Have fun!

Android phone as 3G modem on Linux

I was quite sad when the Linux couldn't connect to internet using LG GT540 via USB cable. Since the phone runs Android 2.1 there is no option of WiFi Hotspot, but I found a working solution called Barnacle Wi-Fi Tether . Just open the market app and look for this app. Once you installed it open and press "Start" button. Optionally you can make a password for your WiFi connection in the settings menu. On many phones you need to enable Skip wpa_supplicant in Settings to actually create the ad-hoc network. In that case WEP will most likely not work.

Turn on WiFi on your computer and Linux should notice you about new availabe WiFi connection by default named "barnacle". Connect and start surfing the web.

I like that this app also displays the connection speed and dowload/uploaded data.
On Windows you need to check TCP/IP settings to make sure you are obtaining IP address automatically. It doesn't worked for me first time since I was forgot about static IP settings in WiFi connection since I was using WLAN

At no cost you now have the wireless hotspot probably working even with old Android 1.5 phones too :)

Here are some more detailed steps about WiFi tethering on rooted Android phones:

List of Android Game Engines

Update 2012-12-23:
There is fresh list that I found on Intel developers blog and big thanks to Jason for a really detailed list
of Android Game Engines

I was currently searching for these lately and made a quick list which engines are worth your attention.

LibGDX - Java game engine for mobile and desktop game engines. You can make both 3D and 2D games and it's cross-platform so you can make games for all major systems Linux,Windows and MacOS . More information on official page http://libgdx.badlogicgames.com . It's free for commercial use.

WiEngine - a powerful game engine based on Cocos2D. The main website is in Chinese, but examples should help you get started. You can also check the WiAd which helps to add in game advertisements and earn revenue. You need to register to download the SDK.

Papaya Game Engine - This one looks really easy and promising engine. You can also download additional SDKs for in-game payments and online score boards. Quote from original site:

The Papaya game Engine was written entirely in C and is much faster than Java based game engines. We've benchmarked our engine against the competition to make sure it outperforms them all.

Games can be written for Papaya game engine in Python or ActionScript, making it simple for any experienced engineer to start building games immediately.

AndEngine - Has a nice community forums and great tutorials section to get started. Licensed under LGPL and written in Java. Here is some features:

  • Android-Optimized
  • Android 1.6 Compatibility
  • SplitScreen
  • Network Multiplayer
  • Live-Wallpapers
  • MultiTouch
  • Physics-Engine (Box2D)
You can look in Android market for a demo application.

E3Droid - 2D OpenGL Game Engine. Supports LUA,JavaScript scripting and other goodies.

Here is some more engines to try:

Candroid    Cocos2D-Android  Android 2D Engine  ANGLE   Android 3D Engine  Rokon  Alien3D

Just use the one that fits all your needs ;)

Android On VirtualBox

The official Android emulator based on QEMU is really slow and makes me depressed, when it comes to testing real apps. So for that reason I was quite away from testing games development on this OS. Even Windows Mobile 6.5 emulator booted much faster :) Luckily I randomly found a Android-x86 project which tries to port Android for native desktop computers and laptops. You can find some screenshots on their Picasa web album.

I was supper happy since after booting Android from virtual ISO image it loaded maybe 15x faster
than on standard emulator. I was testing older Android-x86 1.6-r2 version which doesn't worked on a real PC.

Update:  I found another ISO for testing android-x86-eeepc-2.0.iso
which worked just fine on a real PC,but pretty slowly on my widescreen resolution. I decided
to keep using it on VirtualBox emulator only. Lets hope soon to have Android on native x86 architecture Netbooks and UMPC.

More info:

Looking Forward to Android $100 Laptops
and something random: Android powered Washing Machine :)

Running Android on VirtualBox on meh Linux Mint 9.
Now let's have some fun with apps development :)
